"Water from the roof drains flows into storage tanks, and from there, it's pumped outdoors for irrigation. So far, we haven't needed to use potable water for this purpose," Sharvelle explains. Britta Strother, director of planning for Dominion Water and Sanitation District, which serves Sterling Ranch, highlights the community's unique approach: "We're sitting right above what will be Colorado's very first rainwater harvesting basin."
The community has been studying rainfall, runoff, and vegetation use in Sterling Gulch since 2010. Researchers have determined that the harvestable rainfall in the area can support a meaningful supplemental water supply. Dominion Water and Sanitation is now seeking approval from the water court to use this water for irrigating parks and common spaces.

Professor Sharvelle emphasizes the significance of Sterling Ranch's project: "Sterling Ranch is the only one that's a neighborhood-wide initiative, and that scale makes it unique and impactful.
