A Past Conviction Halts a Canadian Tour: Country Star Charley Crockett Denied Entry!
It’s a stark reminder that past actions can indeed cast a long shadow, even for a celebrated artist. Texas country music sensation Charley Crockett has been forced to cancel his entire Canadian tour after being denied entry into the country over the weekend. The reason? A past drug conviction that has now come back to haunt him.
The Unexpected Roadblock
Crockett, a 41-year-old singer-songwriter known for his blend of country and folk, was all set to perform at Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre on Saturday. However, upon attempting to cross the border, both in Vancouver and later in Kelowna, B.C., he and his band were turned away. The official reason for denial was cited under subsection 44(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Act, stemming from a felony conviction dating back to 2016.
A Look Back at the Conviction
In 2014, Charley Crockett was arrested in Virginia on charges of felony possession and trafficking of marijuana. After spending time in jail and posting bail, he ultimately received a 10-year suspended sentence, a fine of US$10,000, and was placed on probation. This history, it seems, is what has led to his current predicament.
But here's where it gets controversial...
What makes this situation particularly puzzling is that Crockett has successfully toured Canada in 2024 and was even in the country as recently as last summer, performing in Toronto alongside fellow Texan Leon Bridges. If his past conviction was known and he was allowed entry before, why the sudden refusal now? This raises questions about the consistency of immigration policies and how past offenses are re-evaluated.
Following the denial, Crockett had to cancel a string of shows across Canada, including dates in Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Niagara Falls, Ontario. He took to his Instagram account to express his apologies, stating, "Everybody’s got a past. Mine’s still haunting me." He added, "I apologize to everyone affected. I know I let y’all down. Canada’s such a beautiful country full of some of the best fans in the world, and I’ve had the best time of my life playing shows for y’all."
A Prolific Artist with a Unique Voice
For those unfamiliar with Crockett, he's an incredibly prolific and photogenic artist. Since 2015, he's released an impressive 15 albums, with six dropping just since 2022! His upcoming album, Age Of The Ram, due out April 3rd, is the final part of his Sagebrush Trilogy. His music often draws inspiration from the romanticism of the Old West, with lyrics that tell tales of cowboys and historical figures. He even created a fictional character, Billy McLane, a cattle rustler, with whom he seems to identify, singing, "He’s just a ten-dollar cowboy, who looks a lot like me."
And this is the part most people miss...
Beyond his music, Crockett is known for being an outspoken artist who isn't afraid to critique the country music establishment. He recently made headlines for defending Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show, calling for Elon Musk's deportation, and labeling President Donald Trump a "draft dodger" and a "grifter." His strong opinions and willingness to engage in public discourse add another layer to his persona.
His current North American tour, which began in Seattle, is set to resume on March 7th in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
